Zombie Burger at Googies Art Cafe and The Folkestone Herald shoot

I was thrilled when Keith Holland, the owner of Googies Art Café - which is featured in the novel - created a Zombie Burger for the release of Blog of the Dead - Sophie. I'm a HUGE Googie burger fan, so it was a great honour. Below is the poster Keith made for the release.

The Zombie Burger proved such a big success that Keith recently decided to put it on the menu full time. And I can vouch for the fact that the Zombie Burger is delicious!

Googies was also the venue of the photo shoot for my recent appearance in The Folkestone Herald.

Here are some more shots taken on the day by Ian D Johnstone of IDJ Media, who also did the photography on the front cover of Blog of the Dead - Sophie.

Blog of the Dead - Sophie Cover Shoot

Blog of the Dead - Sophie is available now to download from Amazon:

I'm very pleased with the front cover of Blog of the Dead - Sophie. The idea of the Russian dolls came from Suzi Ashworth of Sweet Pandemonium, who designed and painted them for me. I love the detail she went into, even including Stewart's guitar on his back, even though his back wouldn't be seen in the final cover.

The dolls depict Sophie, the main character, Stewart, Zombie-Tracy (invented by Suzi), Zombie-Liam and Kay. Kay's doll is the smallest, at about 2 inches tall, but Suzi has painted tiny flip flops and delicate little toes.

The photography was done by Ian D Johnstone of IDJ Media and I think the old school style of photography adds to the overall effect.

Ian's great sense of humour created some wonderful shots, and the one above of Kay peeping out from the other doll's bodies is one of my favourites from the shoot.

I am proud to have Suzi and Ian's work on my front cover. And the fact that they are both Folkestone locals means even more. The novel is, after all, set in Folkestone, Kent, and I am very passionate about my crazy little town.

Day One: Nineteen-year-old Sophie wakes to a terrifying voicemail message from her friend Laura. Through screams and the sound of pounding feet, all she can make out is ‘... took her face off …’

Sophie heads to the university to search for Laura but it’s sealed off by police. Later, riots break out in the High Street with fatal consequences. The dead, well, they’re rising to feast on the living. And when her housemate, Richard, is bitten in the violence, the plague is brought too close to home.

In the dystopian world of the living dead, Sophie decides to document her experiences in a blog. With a zombie in her bedroom, and with sleazy Sam and potty mouthed drama queen, Leanne for zombie apocalypse partners, things aren’t great. And they’re going to get a whole lot worse. When hunger forces Sophie and her friends out into the zombie infested streets of Folkestone, Kent, they meet other survivors, big guys with iron bars and psychos. And they discover a nifty skill for killing zombies. Sophie has a plan – to rebuild the town and create a secure community. But like the best laid plans …

Powerful friendships are quickly formed and even quicker lost, and in the daily fight for survival, Sophie learns that zombies are not always the biggest threat.

The novel has 14 5 star reviews on Amazon, and here are a few of the comments:

Sophie is fantastic - she would kick Katniss Everdeen's ass in a heartbeat. Bella Swan need not apply. A fantastically drawn character who I would definitely want on my Z-Day apocalypse dream team’

I romped through it quickly, dreamed about it that night, talked about it the next day. I found certain areas really got under my skin and made me wonder’

A fabulous book that should be made into a film at the earliest opportunity!’

The only other person who has given me that sense of reality in what is a piece of fantasy writing is Stephen King with The Stand.’

A brilliant début novel by a new author who is obviously destined to become a great best selling international author!’

A delightful twist on the standard Zombie story direction’

A vicious slice of doubt into what should be a simple ‘kill zombies, stay alive’ world’

I was thrilled to receive this piece of fan art by Jake Broster, inspired by a scene in Blog of the Dead - Sophie. So much so that I have printed it off and put it on the wall above my writing desk.

I received another lovely present last week ... a Blog of the Dead - Sophie mug. I'm so pleased with it.

There are 2 twists to the ‘standard’ zombie story that blew my mind!’

Two totally original takes on the zombies themselves, that I have never seen in other books or films of this genre’

There is wit, humour, terror, compassion and anger in these characters ...’

It stands out from the majority of zombie apocalypse genre books in writing style and plot’

If you appreciate good writing with a splat of black humour, this is definitely for you!’
